My Editing Process Step-By-Step

  1. Initial Contact: Once you’ve contacted me through email with the basic details of your project (a summary of your manuscript, the genre, the word count, and your editing needs), we can continue the conversation either by phone or email. We will talk more about your project and also schedule a sample edit.
  2. Sample edit: As part of the hiring process, I will perform a paid sample edit over 1–2 chapters of your manuscript. This will give you a good idea of my work and provide me with a better understanding of your manuscript and its needs. After I return the sample edit to you (usually a 1–2 week turnaround), we can discuss any questions you have about my edits by phone or email.
  3. Contract: If you agree to hire me based on my sample edit, I will draw up a contract that outlines the scope of the work I will perform, the cost, and the deadlines. Once we have both signed the contract, you will pay me a 25% deposit of the agreed-upon cost of the project as a deposit to book my services.
  4. Editing: I will perform multiple rounds of edits on your manuscript (always at least two). During this stage, I may have questions for you. Once I have finished my work, I will invoice you. After I have received the remaining 75% of the agreed-upon cost for the work, I will release my edits to you.
  5. Follow-up: We can discuss any questions you have about my edits by phone or email.

Step 4.5. Optional Second Pass:
For two-pass copyediting, once you have accepted and rejected my Track Changes on the manuscript, you can send it back to me for a final pass. I will ensure that no new errors were introduced and that the project’s style guide was followed for internal consistency. If you are interested in this extra step, we need to agree to it at the beginning of the project in the contract to budget and schedule accordingly. This is not the same as a second complete editing round because it is only focused on double-checking the revisions.
